My Wellness Journey and the Benefits of Music
Blog Part 1 by Oliver Scales Copeland
Over the last few years, I have had an experience with different facets of mental health. Although it has been somewhat confronting, it has reenergised my love for music, and its restorative powers. My struggle with anxiety and depression, has paved the way for new ventures through my compositions, which previously, I could not have tapped into. The depths of emotional experience has been more in focus for me during this time, and it has shaped the contour of my compositional journey. From low, relaxed sounds to high-paced energised tracks, I have used my song writing abilities to emphasise differing emotional states, resulting in diverse and eclectic tracks. So, through this journey of self-discovery, I have rediscovered the art of music making in a cathartic manner and now love sharing it with the world.
My Wellness Journey and the Benefits of Tai Chi and Qi Gong
Blog Part 2 by Oliver Scales Copeland
Although music has been inspiring, uplifting and empowering in my life, it is only one aspect of my journey through mental health. The benefits of various forms of exercise such as Tai Chi have enabled me to feel more regulated and healthy. I first started Tai Chi several years ago, yet I confess I was not very far into the journey when I stopped for awhile. A year or two later and I decided to pick it up again, through books and online tutorials I now have a 15 minute repertoire. I have also had the privilege to share what I know with a class on a few occasions.
So, I have found Tai Chi to be cleansing of the mind and body. It is calming and meditative, while at the same time, an activator of certain muscle groups I didn't know I hadn't worked on. It's a great way to centre oneself and to also to strengthen certain muscles, tendons and ligaments.
I recommend giving it a try!
